Perten Instruments has long been recognized for the robustness and accuracy of its grain moisture measurement equipment. Among its lineup, the Perten AM5200-A has established itself as a benchmark in grain centers and among many commercial operators. Fast, precise, and widely accepted for official grain grading, it nevertheless relies on a key element that is often underestimated: strict maintenance management. A

A critical yet sensitive update!

Each year, the AM5200-A must be updated to integrate the new calibration files required by the Canadian Grain Commission, along with updated product and parameter files dictated by current standards. This ensures that moisture readings remain compliant with both market expectations and regulatory requirements.

In theory, the update process is straightforward. In practice, a file conflict can easily occur if the update is not performed exactly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

The most common symptom: the “infinity” icon (∞)

One of the most well-known signs of a problematic update is the appearance of an infinity (∞) icon at the top of the AM5200-A screen. This symbol is not meaningless — it typically indicates that the device has detected inconsistencies among internal files:

  • old files not properly overwritten;
  • duplicate calibrations;
  • incompatibility between the software version and the loaded product database.

When this icon appears, the device may still boot up, but it no longer knows which calibration to use. In other words, you can no longer be sure that the moisture meter is functioning correctly.

Why do these conflicts occur?

In most cases, the problem doesn’t come from the hardware itself, but rather from how the update was carried out. Copying new files without removing the old ones, interrupting the update process, or using a poorly prepared USB key is often enough to cause a conflict.

Best practices to avoid this issue

To prevent the appearance of the infinity icon, a few simple rules should be followed:

  • use a USB key dedicated solely to the update;
  • follow the update procedure carefully and precisely.

The Perten AM5200-A remains a reliable and high-performing tool, but like any precision instrument, it requires disciplined maintenance. The infinity icon is not a fatal error — it's a sign of potential non-compliance. When properly understood and managed, the annual update ensures not only the device’s compliance, but also peace of mind for operators during the critical process of grain grading.
