In Quebec, corn drying often takes place under challenging conditions: high-moisture grain, fluctuating temperatures, and the urgency to finish the harvest before the snow falls. In this context, optimizing the drying process means optimizing fuel consumption while maintaining a satisfactory throughput and preserving grain quality. The key lies in proper adjustments and rigorous monitoring.
Harvesting sooner rather than later can reduce energy consumption by more than 15%. Contrary to popular belief, waiting in the field for moisture to drop isn't the most economical choice: later harvests mean colder drying air (which burns more propane per point removed), lost grain volume, and higher risk of soil compaction.
In cold weather, the burner must provide more energy to bring the air to the desired temperature. Settings used on a mild day may therefore need to be adjusted during a cold night. Keep this in mind if you want efficient drying!
Ken Hellevang, an agricultural engineer and grain drying specialist at North Dakota State University, explains that a higher plenum temperature can increase capacity and reduce the energy required to remove a given amount of moisture. However, this temperature must stay within the system’s limits and preserve the desired quality. Warning! Very moist corn, if exposed to excessive heat for too long, can turn brown and become more brittle.
An efficient dryer must also be well-ventilated. In cold weather, condensation on its walls causes dust and debris to stick. These buildups can clog perforated surfaces, reduce airflow, and slow down the drying process. Regularly inspect vulnerable areas and clean them according to your system’s instructions. Regular cleaning can increase your drying efficiency by 15%!
And above all, if you want efficient and compliant drying, don’t forget to calibrate your moisture meter!
